Astaxanthin, also known as haematococcus pluvialis extract or shrimp pink pigment, is a type of carotenoid. Like other carotenoids, astaxanthin is a fat-soluble and water-soluble pigment found in shrimp, crab, salmon, algae, and other marine life. Astaxanthin is an antioxidant secreted by algae (when in sunlight or adverse environments to survive), belonging to the carotenoid family. When fish and shrimp consume these algae, their appearance or muscle tissue exhibits an orange-red hue, hence the name.
